Two weeks ago we had a huge scare with our Great Dane, Venus. She developed bloat, a scary, sudden, painful condition that occurs in large dogs (horses get it, too). A dog with bloat can die in hours. Luckily, Carla caught it quickly and rushed Venus to the emergency where she had major surgery and then stayed at the hospital for two nights with a huge incision in her belly and an IV drip for constant pain killer.
I was so upset that I was not able to blog about it at the time. But now she is all better. Last week she got her stitches (actually staples) taken out and there is no permanent damage to her stomach. We were so lucky. If you have a large dog, keep on the lookout for bloat! It is very serious, painful, and usually fatal. You can read about the symptoms here.
Here is a photo of my niece, Vivian, snuggling Venus. |
